- Have you encountered students or colleagues with a fixed mindset? How does this mindset impact learning in the classroom and/or professional development within your school?
- How might the arts and an arts-integrated curriculum support the development of a growth mindset?
- Are there teaching practices that you already employ in your classroom to support a growth mindset?
Your final assignment due for Friday, July 31st
- Select three teaching strategies from Lorrie's presentation and resource and share you plan to incorporate them in your classroom for the coming year. Write down or e-mail these to Lorrie first thing Friday morning - remember your name :)
- Journal Entry for Thursday 7/30: Review Why Arts Education Matters and use it as resource to help respond to this journal entry: A person who can effect educational policy happens to walk into your room while you are delivering an arts integrated lesson and asks "Why are you teaching arts?
Start your journal entry with "I'm so glad that you asked! Here's why ……"

Lorrie Heagy is a music teacher and program director of Juneau, Alaska Music Matters (JAMM), an El Sistema-inspired program that provides violin instruction for over 500 students in the Juneau School District. She has been a Lead Teacher for several Basic Art Institutes, as well as adjunct professor at UAS where she taught the MAT course in elementary education emphasizing philosophy, differentiated learning, brain research and arts integration. Lorrie has eighteen years experience in the classroom and is honored to have represented Alaska’s teachers as the 2011 Alaska Teacher of the Year. Lorrie holds three master’s degrees of education: elementary, music and library education, as well as ELL and Waldorf teaching certificates. Lorrie is pursuing a Ph.D. in Education with a specialization in instruction, learning, and innovation.
In 2015-2016, Lorrie initiated a partnership with JAMM, the Juneau Symphony, and the University of Alaska Southeast to create a one-year Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Secondary Education with a certification in K-12 Music to reflect the changing role of today’s music teacher. Four string musicians with performance degrees received scholarships to serve as a quartet-in-residence and will perform with the Juneau Symphony and conduct their student teaching at JAMM schools while pursuing this one-year degree. Part of their coursework is participating in the Basic Arts Institute! |
